Astonishing Factoids You Never Knew About South Park - TVStoreOnline

For 26 seasons and counting, Comedy Central’s South Park–created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone–has been making folks laugh.  The cartoon series that often tackles controversial topics with glee, while centering on the antics of four, little foul-mouthed 8-year-old boys living in the sleepy town of South Park, Colorado, was originally created back in 1992.

The Origins of South Park

South Park was created by Parker and Stone out of a slightly different concept, though. Based on a 4-minute animated short, The Spirit of Christmas: Jesus vs. Frosty, Parker and Stone’s concept for the show came out of a short film made while at the University of Colorado. A short film about four little boys who build a snowman and watch it come to life and kill them, only to have Jesus himself step in to save the day, it cost a total of $750 dollars to make.

Featuring animated characters made out of standard construction paper which were glued down within the frame, The Spirit of Christmas would go on to become one of the internet’s first viral videos when it would surface online for the first time.

How South Park Became A Hit TV Series

Comedy Central gave the show the “green light” in 1996.  With the television network Central struggling to stay afloat after finding only modest success during the late-1980s with the show Mystery Science Theater 3000, the owners of the network, 20th Century Fox had been looking to revamp its programming.

Parker and Stone were offered a show on Comedy Central after a Fox executive had seen their Spirit of Christmas short film. Originally asking for a similar video that he could give his family and friends during the holiday season, the executive was so impressed with their work that he decided to put it on the network instead.

The Premiere Of South Park

When the show premiered in August of 1997 with the episode “Cartman Gets an Anal Probe,” it was the very first weekly show in pay cable television to air with a MA rating.  South Park would quickly move on to become the highest rated show on basic cable.

The show took the network from a failing basic cable channel to a success almost overnight. In 1997, Comedy Central was in 9.7 million homes.  A year later, in 1998, it was propelled into over 50 Million homes.  5 years later, in 2003, the network and the show was seen in 82 Million homes across the world.

South Park’s Legacy

Fifteen years following its debut, South Park is still Comedy Central’s most-watched show. Today, the show averages 3.5 million viewers per episode.

Parker, Stone and their creative team create, edit and produce an episode of South Park for airing in just 7 short days; the shortest of any TV show in history.  To date, South Park has won 4 Emmys, a Peabody Award, and countless others. In 2007, Time magazine listed the show in its “100 Greatest Shows of All Time” list.
