When Will Ghostbusters 3 Be Made? The Making of Ghostbusters 3
There has been an overwhelming amount of speculation as to whether or not a third Ghostbusters movie would grace the silver screen. The first major buzz came in the '90s when lead actor Dan Aykroyd wrote a script for a potential Ghostbusters 3. Although Hollywood was interested, many of the other stars weren’t interested in committing to the project. Since that time, Aykroyd was the man who, time and time again, attempted to give Ghostbusters 3 life. Again in 2012, it seemed as though the project was in development hell, but the red lights appear to have been lifted. Despite all of the suspensions and rejections throughout the years, it seems as though the dream of Ghostbusters fans has become reality.
Ghostbusters 3 will begin filming in 2015. Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, the original writer of Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters 2 form the writing team, which is rounded out with Etan Coen, screenwriter of Tropic Thunder and writer-producers from The Office fame, Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky. Ivan Reitman, acclaimed producer from such films as Up in the Air, Space Jam, and two previous Ghostbusters films, will also act as the film's executive producer.
What remains to be seen is if this dynamic collaboration of creative minds can enlist the support of Bill Murray. Assuming that they haven’t done so already, attracting Murray to Ghostbusters 3 would be a huge victory. In contrast to the supportive role that Aykroyd has taken on in support of the Ghostbusters franchise, Murray has rejected the prior attempts at creating Ghostbusters 3. In a March 2010 interview with David Letterman Murray told Letterman, who asked him about his return to Ghostbusters 3, "I'd do it only if my character was killed off in the first reel."
Murray has maintained a steadfast disapproval of prior attempts to create Ghostbusters 3. Acting on his belief that sequels are often detrimental to a film franchise, it remains to be seen whether or not producers can draw Murray to return to his lead role. Of course, Harold Ramis, the actor-producer who played Egon Spengler from the first two films, passed away on February 14, 2014. In spite of this, it is believed that Ramis will be featured in a cameo.
While the hurdles have been both numerous and longstanding, the question is not whether or not Ghostbusters 3 will happen, the question is only: when can we watch?
