Early Wednesday morning, news that the trailer was being yanked from theaters hit the Internet. The MPAA was forcing Warner Bros. to pull the trailer that was shown in theaters this weekend in front of the new Jake Gyllenhaal film, Source Code. Copies of the trailer were asked to be destroyed.
Early in the day, it was unclear why the trailer was in the cause of such action, but Warner Bros. finally clued fans of the movie series in with the release of the following statement: "In our haste to meet the placement schedule for this trailer, we failed to properly vet the final version with the MPAA. We acted immediately to correct the mistake and removed the trailer from screens."
What scene was at the center of the controversy? A scene involving a pet monkey the group picks up in Bangkok is the cause of it all. At the end of the 2:20 long trailer, the monkey simulates an act that would be completely inappropriate to be seen by young children. This film did play in front of a PG-13 film. Families in attendance could have easily complained.
The Hangover 2 will hit theaters on May 26, and a new trailer will be ready for release by April 15. With this film, the action taken on Wednesday was quick and confusing.
